South Africa has withdrawn an order directing refugee reception offices to process asylum applications following clashes between foreign nationals and anti-migrant groups.
The government announced the withdrawal on Friday, a day after violence broke out in Soweto, Johannesburg, and Durban, where several cars were set ablaze and foreign-owned shops were looted.
The directive followed a Constitutional Court ruling that certain procedural restrictions on asylum seekers were unconstitutional.
Its implementation drew hundreds of people to refugee reception offices, triggering renewed tensions over immigration and the presence of foreign nationals in the country.
The latest unrest comes amid a wider wave of anti-migrant protests that previously lasted for weeks and prompted tens of thousands of Africans to leave South Africa.
