A mother whose son was among prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members abducted in Imo State says she paid N6 million to secure his release.
The woman told News Central Television that the kidnappers initially demanded N50 million for each victim before eventually agreeing to accept N6 million for her son.
The prospective corps members were abducted on October 1 after gunmen attacked two 18-seater buses travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway.
According to the woman, the kidnappers later reduced their demand to N15 million. She said the family told them it could only raise N5.5 million, but the abductors insisted on N6 million.
She said the kidnappers also instructed families of the victims to send representatives to Ibadan to arrange the ransom payment.
Her husband and elder son travelled to the meeting, where the abductors allegedly directed them to transfer the money to an account and later convert it to dollars in Imo State.
The woman said her elder son was among those who delivered the ransom and later confirmed that the abducted corps member had been released.
“It was the brother who called us this evening to say that they had handed the ransom to the kidnappers and that they had released our son. We also spoke to the boy,” she said.
She said the other abducted corps members had also been released and reunited with their families.
