The Nigerian Navy has uncovered a large reservoir containing about 40,000 litres of substance suspected to be crude oil in the Oteghele area of Delta State.
The discovery was made on October 7 by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship Delta during an operation based on intelligence about suspected crude oil theft in the area.
Navy spokesman, Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, said the substance and the reservoir were dealt with in line with established procedures.
The latest find follows another discovery in the same area on September 21, when naval personnel recovered about 30,000 litres of suspected crude oil.
Folorunsho said the repeated discoveries were part of the Navy’s efforts to disrupt illegal crude oil storage and protect petroleum resources.
“The Nigerian Navy will continue to sustain intelligence-led operations across its Area of Operations to disrupt crude oil theft and protect the nation’s critical petroleum resources,” he said.
