American rapper Rick Ross has been arrested in Miami Beach, Florida, over allegations of domestic violence involving his former girlfriend, Jazzma Kendrick.
Court records cited by NBC News show that Ross, whose real name is William Roberts, faces charges of felony battery by strangulation and misdemeanour battery.
The arrest followed allegations made publicly by Kendrick, a model and content creator, who said she was assaulted during their relationship.
Kendrick posted photographs on Instagram on September 26 showing an injury to her lip, writing that it occurred during an incident involving Ross.
According to court documents cited by NBC News, the alleged assault took place on August 28. Kendrick reported the incident to police on September 29 and provided photographs of the injuries.
She alleged that Ross slapped her repeatedly, struck her chest, pulled her by the hair, pushed her against a wall and hit her in the face.
Ross was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Centre on Thursday, according to Miami-Dade County jail records cited by NBC News. His bond was set at $6,000, and he was released ahead of an arraignment scheduled for October 22.
Ross’s lawyer, Steve Sadow, rejected the allegations and pointed to the timing of the police report.
“Mr. Roberts is innocent and has pled not guilty to the charges. He respectfully requests that his friends, fans and the general public not prejudge the situation and allow the judicial process to run its course,” Sadow said.
The allegations remain subject to judicial proceedings.
