The Jigawa State House of Assembly has begun preparations to consider the Constitution Amendment Bill transmitted by the National Assembly, with Speaker Haruna Dangyatim assuring that the process will be completed within the stipulated period.
Dangyatim disclosed this on Friday during an interactive session with journalists at the Assembly Complex in Dutse, saying the bill had been received by the House for consideration.
He said the National Assembly transmitted the document to state legislatures last Wednesday for concurrence and that the House had constituted a committee to examine the proposed amendments.
The committee is expected to make recommendations that reflect the interests of Jigawa residents, while the Assembly will also engage traditional rulers, civil society organisations and professional bodies before taking a final position.
“We are studying the document thoroughly to ensure that our position aligns with the aspirations of our people,” Dangyatim said.
He described the amendment exercise as important to addressing grey areas in the 1999 Constitution and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic system.
Dangyatim said transparency and patriotism would guide the House’s consideration of the bill.
“We will not compromise the interest of Jigawa State and Nigeria at large,” he said.
