BENIN — The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has handed over N80 million recovered from a suspected land fraudster to a businessman who said he was unable to take possession of a property he purchased in Delta State.
The recovered money was presented on Wednesday, September 24, 2026, to 42-year-old Ifeanyi Innocent Madueke by the Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC’s Benin Zonal Directorate, DCE Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad.
The commission said the funds were recovered from Austine Muanya Okafor, who allegedly collected money from Madueke for 146 acres of land but failed to deliver the property.
Madueke had reportedly paid N232.8 million for the land in a community in Delta State. However, the businessman was unable to take possession despite efforts to establish ownership.
After unsuccessful attempts to obtain a refund from Okafor, Madueke petitioned the EFCC.
The commission said its investigation established that Madueke transferred the money to Okafor in three tranches.
Sa’ad, while presenting the N80 million draft, said the EFCC would continue to discharge its responsibilities professionally and with integrity.
He said, “Fraudsters will never be allowed to reap where they did not sow.”
Madueke expressed appreciation to the commission, saying he had nearly lost hope before seeking its intervention.
“I am grateful to the Commission for what they have done. I had lost hope before I came to EFCC. I thank the management and staff for the good work they are doing,” he said.
