Taiwo Awoniyi has been drafted into Nigeria’s squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after Victor Osimhen was ruled out with a muscle injury.
The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed that Osimhen, who is recovering from the injury sustained while playing for Galatasaray, will miss the upcoming fixtures against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle subsequently called up Awoniyi of Coventry City as a late replacement.
The Super Eagles announced the change on their X account, welcoming the striker back to the national team.
Nigeria is expected to begin preparations in Uyo on Monday ahead of the qualifying fixtures.
The three-time African champions will host Madagascar next Thursday before travelling to Bissau to face Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29.
Awoniyi’s inclusion comes as Nigeria adjusts its attacking options following Osimhen’s withdrawal from the squad.
