The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has pledged to deepen efforts to improve national grid stability, enforce discipline in the electricity market and strengthen staff welfare.
NISO Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Abdu Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement on Friday outlining the organisation’s ongoing reforms and management priorities.
Mohammed said NISO had made progress in maintaining the integrity of the national grid and improving system reliability, while describing staff engagement as important to achieving the organisation’s objectives.
He also identified a successful synchronisation test involving Nigeria and 14 other African countries as a major technical milestone for the system operator.
NISO is investing in critical infrastructure, including ultra-modern National Control Centres under construction in Osogbo, Osun State, and Gwagwalada in the Federal Capital Territory.
Mohammed said the organisation was also deploying Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, Energy Management System, Automatic Generation Control, telemetry and Internet of Things-based monitoring systems.
According to him, the technologies would provide better real-time visibility of the grid, strengthen system control and improve operational efficiency.
He cited the detection of anomalies along the Shagamu–Ikorodu transmission corridor through IoT-based monitoring as an example, adding that investigations into the matter were ongoing.
On staff welfare, Mohammed said NISO had secured approval for a Conditions of Service framework covering staff matters.
He said welfare extends beyond salaries and allowances to include workplace conditions, professional development, career progression, recognition, fairness and effective communication.
Mohammed also said NISO was taking steps to improve the efficiency and financial sustainability of the electricity market.
He pointed to recent engagements and public hearings involving electricity distribution companies over outstanding market obligations, stressing that market participants must meet their financial and operational responsibilities.
He said NISO would continue enforcing the Grid Code and Market Rules, describing compliance and accountability as essential to a sustainable electricity market.
On system planning, Mohammed disclosed that NISO had independently developed a Transmission Expansion Plan, which is being benchmarked against international standards.
He added that the organisation was engaging state electricity markets and regulators to improve coordination and support the development of more stable electricity markets.
