EPL: Xabi Alonso Admits Mistake Over Moises Caicedo After Arsenal Defeat

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has admitted that the club may have brought midfielder Moises Caicedo back into action too soon after the Ecuadorian suffered an injury shortly after making his first appearance of the season.

Alonso made the admission after Chelsea’s 2-1 Premier League defeat to Arsenal on Sunday, a result that came with Caicedo unavailable for the London derby.

The midfielder had already missed Chelsea’s opening league fixture against Fulham and was also absent from the club’s Carabao Cup victory over Luton Town. His return finally came during last weekend’s Premier League meeting with Brighton.

Caicedo entered that match in the 68th minute, replacing Pedro Neto, but his comeback lasted only 14 minutes. He was forced off with an injury and was replaced by summer signing Valentin Barco.

The setback subsequently ruled Caicedo out of Chelsea’s clash with Arsenal, leaving Alonso without one of his key midfielders as his side suffered a second defeat to the Gunners.

Alonso wary of repeating Caicedo mistake

Speaking after the Arsenal defeat, Alonso indicated that Chelsea were being cautious with the midfielder’s recovery and insisted that the latest injury was not expected to keep Caicedo out for an extended period.

However, the Chelsea boss accepted responsibility for the timing of the midfielder’s previous return, acknowledging that the decision to reintroduce him against Brighton may have been premature.

“It is not long term, but it’s about assessing the risk,” Alonso said when asked about Caicedo’s condition.

“Probably, last week, we took him too early and I don’t want to make the same mistake again.”

The admission suggests Chelsea will take a more conservative approach before Caicedo is cleared to return, with the club weighing his fitness against the possibility of aggravating the problem.

Caicedo’s difficult start to the season

Caicedo’s campaign has been disrupted from the outset. The midfielder missed Chelsea’s first Premier League match against Fulham and was subsequently unavailable for the Carabao Cup fixture against Luton Town.

His appearance against Brighton appeared to signal the end of that spell on the sidelines, but the brief return was followed by another injury.

The timing proved particularly unfortunate for Chelsea because Caicedo was able to play only a short period after coming on as a substitute before being forced to leave the field.

His absence against Arsenal then deprived Alonso of an established midfield option during a match Chelsea ultimately lost 2-1.

Chelsea also without Colwill

Alonso also referred to defender Levi Colwill while discussing the importance of having his key players available.

The Chelsea manager said both Caicedo and Colwill were important to the team and stressed that their presence improves the quality of his side.

“We need [Caicedo and Colwill] because they are top players and with them we are a better team,” Alonso said.

The comments underline the significance Alonso attaches to the pair as Chelsea continue to navigate the early stages of the season.

For Caicedo, the immediate priority is therefore a full recovery rather than rushing back for another appearance. Alonso’s acknowledgement that Chelsea previously brought him back “too early” indicates that the club does not want to repeat that approach.

Arsenal defeat adds to Chelsea concerns

Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Arsenal meant Caicedo watched from the sidelines as his teammates surrendered the advantage at Stamford Bridge.

Morgan Rogers gave Chelsea an early lead before Arsenal recovered, with Kai Havertz scoring the equaliser and Martin Odegaard later putting the Gunners ahead.

The defeat left Chelsea on six points after three Premier League matches, while Arsenal maintained their perfect start with nine points.

Caicedo’s absence was therefore felt during an important fixture, particularly as Chelsea sought to maintain their early-season momentum.

Alonso’s immediate concern, however, appears to be ensuring that the midfielder does not suffer another setback by returning before he is ready.

Chelsea adopt a cautious approach

The Chelsea manager’s comments point to a more measured approach to Caicedo’s rehabilitation following the injury suffered against Brighton.

Rather than focusing solely on whether the midfielder is physically capable of playing, Alonso said Chelsea would assess the risks involved before deciding when he should return.

That approach could keep Caicedo out for longer than initially hoped, but Alonso made clear that the latest problem is not considered a long-term injury.

For Chelsea, the objective is to ensure that one of their most important midfielders returns fully fit rather than repeating the sequence that saw him make a brief comeback against Brighton before being forced off.

Alonso’s admission that bringing Caicedo back too early was a mistake provides a clear indication of the lesson the Chelsea manager has taken from the setback.

With the season still in its early stages, Chelsea will now prioritise Caicedo’s recovery and carefully assess the risk before sending him back onto the pitch.
