Lagos State University (LASU) has condemned the reported assault of one of its students at a privately operated hostel outside the university campus, saying it has commenced disciplinary proceedings against students allegedly linked to the incident.
The university said the incident involved students of its College of Medicine in Ikeja and occurred at a private hostel located outside LASU’s premises. Although the reported assault did not take place within the university campus, the institution said the circumstances surrounding the incident warranted its intervention through its internal disciplinary procedures.
LASU disclosed its position in a statement issued in Lagos on Friday and signed by the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, Mrs Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile. The statement said the affected student had reported the matter to the police, with law enforcement authorities subsequently taking appropriate steps over the reported incident.
University Opens Internal Disciplinary Process
Thomas-Onashile explained that the university’s decision to initiate its own disciplinary process was based on the alleged involvement of LASU students, despite the location of the hostel being outside the institution’s immediate control. She said management had begun proceedings against the students allegedly connected to the incident in accordance with the university’s established rules and regulations.
The university’s intervention therefore runs alongside the police response to the complaint, with LASU focusing on the conduct of students who may have been involved. The institution did not state that the allegations had been established as fact, but said disciplinary action had commenced against those allegedly connected to the incident.
“The university management unequivocally condemns this act of violence in the strongest terms,” Thomas-Onashile said, stressing the institution’s position that violence and other forms of misconduct have no place within its community.
LASU said its standards concerning student conduct are not limited strictly to activities occurring within the physical boundaries of its campuses. The university stressed that assault, intimidation and harassment involving students, staff members or visitors would not be tolerated, whether such conduct occurs on campus or at locations outside the university.
According to the institution, behaviour of that nature is incompatible with the values and principles expected of members of the university community. It said students are expected to conduct themselves responsibly and uphold standards that reflect the character and discipline associated with their education at LASU.
Students Reminded of Conduct Obligations
The university also used the development to remind students of their responsibility to uphold both academic and moral standards. Thomas-Onashile referenced LASU’s expectation that students should remain “worthy in character and learning,” reflecting the institution’s broader objective of producing graduates who combine academic achievement with responsible conduct.
The reminder comes as the university seeks to reinforce expectations surrounding student behaviour, particularly in circumstances involving interactions beyond the immediate university environment. LASU urged students to exercise caution in their daily activities and avoid situations that could expose them to danger or put their personal safety at risk.
Students were also encouraged to report security threats, incidents and other concerns to the appropriate authorities promptly. The university said timely reporting can enable relevant authorities to respond appropriately when students encounter situations capable of threatening their safety or welfare.
The institution’s appeal extends beyond individual students. LASU called on parents and guardians to work with the university in promoting discipline and responsible behaviour among their wards. Thomas-Onashile urged parents to engage constructively with the university while respecting the institution’s established procedures and boundaries.
She also encouraged parents and guardians to reinforce the importance of discipline, integrity and responsible conduct among their children and wards. The university said maintaining acceptable standards of behaviour requires cooperation between students, their families and the institution.
Safety and Welfare Remain Priority
LASU reaffirmed that the safety and welfare of its students remain central to its responsibilities. The university said it would continue to support measures designed to provide an environment in which students can pursue their education without unnecessary threats to their security or well-being.
“The university reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the well-being, safety and academic success of every student,” Thomas-Onashile said.
The institution added that it would sustain measures aimed at maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment for its student population. The university’s response to the reported hostel incident reflects its position that student welfare and disciplinary standards remain relevant even when alleged misconduct occurs outside university-owned premises.
While the police process will address the reported assault from a law-enforcement perspective, LASU’s internal disciplinary proceedings are expected to determine whether students allegedly connected to the incident breached the university’s rules and, if so, what sanctions may apply under those regulations.
For the university, the case has also provided an opportunity to reiterate its expectations regarding student conduct, personal safety and the responsibilities shared by students, parents and university authorities. LASU said students must remain conscious of their surroundings, report threats when necessary and conduct themselves in ways consistent with the institution’s standards.
The university maintained that its commitment to academic development cannot be separated from the responsibility to promote discipline, integrity and respect within the university community. It therefore urged students to make responsible choices and cooperate with established authorities whenever incidents capable of threatening their safety or that of others occur.
LASU’s management said it would continue to monitor the situation and pursue the internal process in accordance with its regulations, while the relevant law-enforcement authorities handle the reported complaint.
