Police investigating the killing of veteran British politician Ann Widdecombe have arrested a 28-year-old man in South Yorkshire, while stressing that detectives remain open-minded about what motivated the attack.
The suspect, described by investigators as a white British man, was arrested in Rotherham on Saturday evening following an intensive investigation led by Devon and Cornwall Police. Officers said they are not currently seeking any additional suspects.
Investigation Continues
Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said detectives are pursuing all available lines of inquiry and have not established any evidence suggesting the killing was politically or ideologically motivated.
He urged the public to avoid spreading speculation on social media, warning that unverified claims could hinder the investigation and cause further distress to the victim’s family.
According to police, investigators are continuing to examine all possible circumstances surrounding the incident before determining a motive.
Timeline of the Incident
Police believe Widdecombe, 78, was attacked at her home on Dartmoor at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Her body was discovered almost 24 hours later after she suffered what police described as serious injuries.
Investigators have also reviewed electronic communications made shortly before the suspected attack.
Text messages released from an exchange between Widdecombe and a Channel 5 producer indicate she was actively responding to messages until 12:19 p.m., before communication suddenly stopped. She also failed to attend a scheduled remote television interview later that day.
Authorities are examining the timeline as part of efforts to establish exactly what occurred.
Earlier Arrest Ends Without Charges
Before the latest arrest, police had detained a 26-year-old man in Newton Abbot on suspicion of murder.
That individual was later released as investigations progressed, with detectives subsequently identifying and arresting the new suspect in South Yorkshire.
Political Motive Yet to Be Established
The investigation has attracted widespread public attention because Widdecombe was a prominent political figure, having served as a Conservative cabinet minister before later becoming Reform UK’s Immigration and Justice spokesperson in 2023.
Despite public discussion surrounding a possible political motive, police say no evidence currently supports that theory.
Assistant Chief Constable Longman reiterated that detectives are keeping “an open mind” and that determining motive remains part of the ongoing investigation.
Security Concerns Raised
The killing has reignited debate over the safety of British politicians.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said the incident had raised concerns about the security of people involved in public life, although he acknowledged investigators had not confirmed any political motivation.
Reports suggesting Reform UK politicians had received enhanced security protection were later challenged by the party.
Home affairs spokesperson Zia Yusuf said no additional state security had been provided, claiming previous requests from Reform MPs regarding personal safety had not received official responses.
Wider Debate on Threats Against Politicians
The case has also prompted renewed discussion about threats directed at elected officials across the United Kingdom.
Labour MP and Trade Minister Sir Chris Bryant said he had received numerous death threats during his political career and noted that concerns over politicians’ safety have intensified following the murders of MPs Jo Cox in 2016 and Sir David Amess in 2021.
Bryant said the overall tone of political debate had become increasingly hostile but praised police for the protection and support provided to Members of Parliament.
Public Asked to Assist Investigation
Police said members of the public have already submitted more than 120 pieces of information through a dedicated online portal established for the investigation.
Detectives are urging anyone with additional information that could assist the inquiry to come forward as soon as possible.
Assistant Chief Constable Longman thanked those who had already provided information, saying public cooperation remains vital as investigators continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding Widdecombe’s death.
Police said further updates will only be released when doing so will not compromise the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
