A new travel survey has ranked the United Kingdom’s best seaside destinations, with several lesser-known coastal towns outperforming many of the country’s more famous beach resorts.
The annual rankings, compiled by Which? Travel from feedback provided by more than 3,500 visitors, evaluated destinations based on scenery, beach quality, atmosphere, food, shopping, attractions and overall value.
Leading the list is Bamburgh in Northumberland with an overall score of 84%, while Aldeburgh, a picturesque Suffolk coastal town within easy reach of London, secured a place among the country’s top seaside destinations.
Aldeburgh Ranked Among Britain’s Best
Aldeburgh achieved an overall destination score of 80%, placing it among the UK’s five highest-rated seaside towns and villages.
Visitors awarded the town four out of five stars for several categories, including:
- Scenic beauty
- Atmosphere
- Food and drink
- Shopping
The Suffolk destination also received three-star ratings for its beach, waterfront, visitor attractions and affordability.
Known for its peaceful atmosphere, pastel-coloured Victorian seafront buildings and wide shingle beach, Aldeburgh continues to attract visitors looking for a quieter alternative to busier seaside resorts.
Famous for Traditional Fish and Chips
One of Aldeburgh’s biggest attractions remains its long-standing reputation for traditional fish and chips.
The family-owned Aldeburgh Fish and Chip Shop, established in 1967, is one of the town’s best-known eateries, serving locally sourced fish alongside chips made from Suffolk-grown potatoes.

Visitors have consistently praised the quality of the food, with reviews highlighting generous portions, fresh seafood and friendly service.
Beyond fish and chips, the town offers a wide range of cafés, bakeries, seafood restaurants and traditional pubs, making it a popular destination for food lovers.
Independent Shopping Adds to the Appeal
Aldeburgh’s bustling High Street is lined with independent businesses rather than large national chains.

Composer Benjamin Britten and tenor Peter Pears founded the Aldeburgh Music Club in 1952, helping establish the town as an important cultural centre.
The annual Aldeburgh Literary Festival continues to attract authors, readers and visitors from across the country.
The town has also been associated with several well-known figures, including former footballer Roy Keane and Peter Sinfield, lyricist and co-founder of the progressive rock band King Crimson.

North East Dominates Rankings
Commenting on the findings, Rory Boland, Editor of Which? Travel, said the survey demonstrates that outstanding seaside destinations can be found across every region of the UK.
He noted that the North East performed particularly well this year, thanks to its combination of attractive beaches and good value for visitors.
Boland added that many smaller coastal communities continue to offer memorable holidays while remaining more affordable than some of Britain’s better-known seaside resorts.
The latest rankings suggest that travellers looking for scenic coastlines, quality local food and traditional seaside charm may find some of the UK’s best experiences away from its busiest tourist destinations.
